Announcing the Public Utilities Commission’s Decision on Net Metering

Published May 2012 by

By an unanimous vote (5-0), the board of commissioners of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) decided in favor of a net-metering calculation method that is favorable to the state’s solar market.

The full CPUC decision is available here.

The clarification in the CPUC’s decision of the existing state law (setting a 5% of aggregate peak demand as the net-metering cap) reversed the methodology of the utilities of dividing the aggregate capacity of all net-metered systems on the grid by utility system peak demand.

In the view of many such as Vote Solar, the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and other solar stakeholders, this decision is favorable to the development of solar in California.
